Free Practice SAT Test--January 31


Get ready for the SATs by taking a free practice SAT test on Saturday, January 31st from 9:45a.m.-2:00p.m. See how you'll score on the SATs without affecting your college record. You will take a full-length test under realistic testings conditions. Pre-registration is required. You can pre-register at the Information/Refernce desk at the Library or call the Library at 714-826-4100 ext.125.
Please bring a calculator and two #2 pencils on test day.

Game Making Workshop--January 24


Do you want to learn how to make your own computer games? Then this workshop is for you. In this workshop you will be using downloadable Game Maker 7.0 software to get you started building your own great games in no time. Game Maker allows you to make exciting computer games, without the need to write a single line of code. Using easy to learn drag-and-drop actions, you can create professional looking games within very little time. This workshop is on Saturday, January 24th from 2:00-4:00 p.m. in the Library's Board Room upstairs. Each participant will have the use of a laptop to create his/her game. There is a limit of 21 attendees so make sure to pre-register at the Library's Information/Reference Desk.

Cookie Decorating Workshop--December 20


There will be a Cookie Decorating Workshop for teens on Saturday, December 20th from 2:30-3:30 p.m. in the Library's auditorium. The supplies needed to make your tasty creations will be provided. You can eat them right away or take them home to share with family or friends.

This video was taken during our 2nd Super Smash Bros. Brawl Tournament. There were about 50 participants. We played a double elimination tournament. Players could play until they had two losses.

After-Hours Amazing Race


On Saturday, August 16, 2008, the Library held our third annual Amazing Race. Teens competed in teams of three. They completed 25 tasks before reaching the finish line. Teams used the Library's database to answer questions about the countries being visited during the race. They also performed tasks related to the culture like building a pyramid out of peanut butter and chex cereal in Egypt, eating hot cheetos in Mexico, and making candy sushi in Japan.

Resume Writing and Job Interview Skills



On Tuesday, August 5th, at 6:30 p.m., American First Credit Union will be conducting a free workshop on resume writing and job interviewing skills. This practical workshop will give you the skills and information you need to help you land your first job.

Discover What the "WRITE" Job for You Is


On Saturday, August 2nd graphologist Paula Sassi will present two programs on handwriting analysis at the Library. At 2:00 p.m., Paula will help you discover "The Write Job" by using handwriting analysis to find out what job categories best fit your personality and abilities. At 3:30 p.m., Paula will present What is Your Personality Type? in which you will have fun learning about yourself and others by discovering the secrets revealed through handwriting analysis.

Magic Workshop July 19th


Magician David Skale will present his comedy magic show and workshop at the Buena Park Library on Saturday, July 19th from 2:00-3:00 p.m. The workshop will teach basic magic concepts and skills. You will actually learn several tricks that you can take home to astonish and impress friends and family. Space is limited. This workshop is for teens only.

MONOPOLY Tournmanet


There will be a MONOPOLY Tournament on Saturday, July 5th from 12:30-4:30 p.m. The top 4 scoring participants from the first 90 minute round will move on to the final 90 minute round to determine the winner. Prizes will be awarded and ice cream sundaes will be served between rounds.

Summer Reading Club for Teens



Teens, ages 12 through 18, are invited to participate in the Summer Reading Club especially for them, Reading: Your Passport to Adventure, at the Buena Park Library District. Sign-ups begin June 20th with a kick-off celebration from 2:00-4:00p.m. You will be able to participate in the Wii Olympic Games, have a caricature of yourself drawn by artist David Boatman, and enjoy pizza and ice cream floats.
During the summer there will be a variety of video and board game tournaments, a magic workshop in which you will learn some magic tricks to amaze your family and friends, have a chance to have your handwriting analyzed by a graphologist to discover what your handwriting suggests is the "best" job for you and discover job interviewing skills and learn to write a job resume. The Teen Summer Reading Club begins June 20th, 2008 and continues through August 23rd, 2008.

New SAT Preparation Videos

Becoming a Money Wise Teen


Teens and their parents are invited to attend a FREE financial workshop sponsored by FFS First Financial on Saturday, May 31st at 2:00 p.m. in the Library's auditorium.

The workshop will cover:
Making financially responsible decisions through investing and saving
Proper use of credit cards
Importance and proper use of checking and savings accounts

California Young Reader Voting




California Young Reader Medal: Where Readers Decide the Winner

Teens, you can have a part in deciding the book that receives the California Young Reader Award for 2007-2008. Begin by picking up a ballot which contains a list of nominated books in the Teen Zone of the Library (look for the display containing all nominated teen titles). To be a qualified voter, you must experience all of the nominated books in a category by reading the books yourself. Books may be read in more than one category, but you may vote for only ONE book in each category. Please return the ballot with your choice marked to the Children’s Room at the Buena Park Library District by March 27, 2008.

  • Receive a score report showing your strengths and weaknesses.

Printz Winner Announced

The Michael L. Printz Award is an award for a book that exemplifies literary excellence in young adult literature. This year's winner is The White Darkness by Geraldine McCaughrean. In the book, fourteen-year-old Symone's exciting vacation to Antarctica turns into a desperate struggle for survival when her uncle's obsessive quest leads them across the frozen wilderness into danger. This book is available for check-out at the library.

Free SAT Practice Test Offered at the Buena Park Library District


Teens, do you want to get ready for the SATs and see how you will score without affecting your college record? If so, you will want to take advantage of the free practice SAT offered at the Buena Park Library District on Saturday, February 2, 2008 from 8:45 am-1:30 pm. You will be taking a full-length SAT test under realistic testing conditions. All you need to bring is two #2 pencils and a calculator. Pre-register at the Information/Reference desk at the Buena Park Library, by calling 714-826-4100 ext. 125 or emailing Phyllis, the Youth Services Librarian, at pnisle@buenapark.lib.ca.us.
Participating teens and their parents are encouraged to come to the Library on Tuesday, February 12, 2008 from 6:00-7:00 pm for the SAT Scoreback and Parent Information Night. At this time students will receive a score report showing their strengths and weaknesses. They will also be able to get free information about colllege admissions and test taking strategies to imporve their score.

Anime Club Meets Tuesday, January 29, 2008

The next meeting of the Buena Park Library's Anime Club is Tuesday, January 29, 2008 from 6:30-7:45. We will be viewing Fruits Basket: A Great Transformation. Here is a brief description of the film:
Under unusual circumstances, Tohru Honda is taken in by members of the Sohma family. The family is cursed. When they are touched by members of the opposite sex, they turn into animals of the Chinese zodiac, plus the cat. What happens when Tohru discovers the family secret? Well, you will just have to come to the Anime Club on January 29th to find out.
