SAT Study Group to Meet at the Library


Whoever said learning can't be fun hasn't joined the SAT study group at the Library. The Library will be hosting an SAT study group on April 7th from 1:00-4:00 p.m. in the Library’s small meeting room. This is a great opportunity for you to meet with other teens who are preparing for the SAT. First you will take a short test in either math or reading comprehension. After taking the test, you will work together to improve your scores by coaching one another in the areas you are strongest.

Books and Brownies for October


October's featured book for Books and Brownies is The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne.
Bored and lonely after his family moves from Berlin to a place called “Out-With” in 1942, Bruno, the son of a Nazi officer, befriends a boy in striped pajamas who lives behind a wire fence. This thought-provoking Holocaust book is told from the viewpoint of an innocent child who is a bystander to this tragic event in history. A movie based on the book was released in 2008.

Books and Brownies for September


The teen book group, Books and Brownies, will be discussing Girl, Stolen by April Henry on September 24th at 3:00.
When an impulsive carjacking turns into a kidnapping, Griffin, a high school dropout, finds himself more in sympathy with his wealthy, blind victim, sixteen-year-old Cheyenne, than with his greedy father.

Books and Brownies for August


The Library's featured book for August is Little Brother by Cory Doctorow. After being interrogated for days by the Department of Homeland Security in the aftermath of a major terrorist attack on San Francisco, California, seventeen-year-old Marcus, released into what is now a police state, decides to use his expertise in computer hacking to set things right.

Practice SAT August 27th


See how you'll score without affecting your college record. Take a full-length SAT test under realistic test conditions on Saturday, August 27th from 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. This practice test is for high school students only. On Thursday, September 8th at 6:30 come back to the library for your score report. There will be a Kaplan representative to explain your score and teach test taking strategies to help you improve your SAT score.

Rock Band Tournament


Get ready to rock! The Library will be having a Rock Band Tournament on Tuesday, August 9th from 6:30-7:45 p.m. in the community room. Compete in groups of three for “rock stardom.” Besides bragging rights, there will be a prize awarded to the winning band.

After-Hours Amazing Race


You are invited to participate in the Library‘s fifth annual After-Hours Amazing Race on Saturday, August 6th from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Compete in teams of two or three as you complete a competitive relay race performing tasks in order to receive clues that will ultimately lead you to the finish line.
Space is limited, so pre-register by dropping by or calling the Library.

Monopoly Deal Tournament


The Library will be having a MONOPOLY® Deal tournament on Tuesday, August 2nd from 6:30-7:45 p.m. in the community room. Wheel and deal your way to the top as you compete in this new card version of the popular board game. A prize will be awarded to the tournament winner.

Minute-To-Win-It


Tackle 60-second unique challenges using items found around the house in the Library’s Minute-to-Win-It Competition on Saturday, July 30th from 2:30-4:00 p.m. Can you complete the challenges and prove you’ve got what it takes to win it in a minute?

Do you have what it takes to be the next Buena Park Library singing sensation? Find out at the Library’s third annual Karaoke Revolution: American Idol Encore Competition on Tuesday, July 26th from 6:30-7:45 p.m. in the Library’s community room. You can compete solo or as a duet as you sing your way to stardom and compete to win the title of Buena Park Library’s Singing Sensation.

Bunco Competition


There will be a Bunco competition at the Library on Saturday, July 23rd from 2:30-4:30 in the Library's upstairs boardroom. This is a simple, fast-paced game of chance which requires no prior knowledge of the game. Roll the dice and look for the winning combination needed to shout “Bunco!” Prizes will be awarded to competition winners.

Mario Kart Tournament


Test your “driving” skills against other teens as you compete against one another in Wii’s Mario Kart on Tuesday, July 19th from 6:30-7:45 in the Library's auditorium. There will be a prize for the tournament winner.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl


There will be a Super Smash Bros. Brawl Tournament on Saturday, July 16th from 2:30-4:00 in the Library's auditorium. Pit your favorite Smash Bros. character against another player in this head-to-head double elimination tournament. A prize will be awarded to the tournament winner.

UNO Tournament


Join us on Tuesday, July 12th from 6:30-7:45 in the Library's auditorium for our annual UNO Tournament. UNO is a fast-paced card game that is easy to learn. A prize will be awarded to the first person to reach 500 points.

Just Dance Competition


Get ready to dance as you compete in the dance battle mode of Wii’s Just Dance 2 on Saturday, July 9th from 2:30-4:00 in the Library's auditorium.
There will be a prize for the competition’s winner.

Yahtzee Tournament


There will be a Yahtzee Tournament on Tuesday, July 5th from 6:30-7:45 in the Library's auditorium. Score points by rolling five dice to make a variety of combinations in this classic game. There will be a prize for the tournament winner.

Books and Brownies for June


The Library's featured book for June is The Dead and the Gone by Susan Pfeffer. After a meteor hits the moon and sets off a series of horrific climate changes, seventeen-year-old Alex Morales must take care of his sisters alone in the chaos of New York City.
Join us on Saturday, June 25th at 2:00 (right before Team Jeopardy) for a lively discussion of this month's featured book and brownies.

Scrabble Tournament


Are you good with words? On Tuesday, June 21st from 6:30-7:45 the Library will host its first Scrabble Tournament. Score points by forming words from lettered tiles. Challenge your friends to this crossword puzzle board game. The tournament winner will receive a prize.

You Are Here: Summer Reading Club for Teens


Sign-ups for the Teen Summer Reading Club begin June 17th with a kick-off celebration from 2:30-4:00 p.m. that will include Wii games, ice cream sundaes and door prizes. Read, read, read this summer and earn chances to win GREAT prizes.

Books and Brownies for May



The Library's Books and Brownies featured book for May is Looking For Alaska by John Green. Join us for brownies and a lively discussion of this month's featured book on Saturday, May 14th at 2:00 (directly before the bento box workshop). In Looking for Alaska, sixteen-year-old Miles' first year at Culver Creek Preparatory School in Alabama includes good friends and great pranks, but is defined by the search for answers about life and death after a fatal car crash.

Bento Box Workshop

Book Discussion: A Step From Heaven


The teens will be reading and discussing An Na's Prinz award winning book A Step From Heaven as part of the Buena Park Reads Together program during the month of April. The book discussion will be held on Saturday, April 9th at 3:00 in the small meeting room downstairs.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl Tournament


We will be having a Super Smash Bros. Brawl Tournament for teens on Saturday, March 19th from 2:30-4:00 in the Library's auditorium. Pit your favorite Smash Bros. character against another player in this head-to-head double elimination tournament. A prize will be awarded to the tournament winner.

March's Book Discussion Selection: Kite Runner


There will be a book and film discussion on The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini on Saturday, March 12th at 1:00 in the Library's auditorium. We will be viewing the film beginning at 1:00. After the film, join us for a discussion of the book and film. This book to film discussioin was made possible by the California Center for the Book.

Are You a Poet and You Don't Know It?


Unleash your inner poet by attending this 4 week poetry writing workshop in March. Juan Farias Alvarez, poet and author, will be leading this workshop on Thursday, March 3, 10, 17, and 31st at 6:30 in the Library's boardroom.
At the end of the 4 week session, all participants will receive a book of poems written by the workshop poets.

Friendship Bracelets Workshop


Come to this creative workshop on Saturday, February 12th at 2:30 and make a friendship bracelet out of colorful embroidery floss. It is easy, fast and fun. Make one for yourself, give to a friend or trade with a friend attending the workshop.

Our next book discussion will be Saturday, February 12th at 3:00 in the Library's small meeting room. Join us for a lively discussion of The Adoration of Jenna Fox by Mary Pearson.
